Throw me a pity party

I really need to do some sewing. I have nothing to wear and I feel like I need to do something productive with my spare time. But I'm totally unmotivated. My latest attempt was a disaster (the first disaster I've had in a long time) and I can't think of anything else to make.

How do I get my motivation back?

Oh! And everyone else seems to be announcing their participation in the BurdaStyle book, so I suppose it's OK if I jump on the bandwagon. I'm doing a coat. I hope I can do it justice! I haven't got my fabric yet, so unfortunately I can't really use this as inspiration to start sewing again just yet.

  1. Oh yay your in on it too, that's cool! I submitted coat and skirt, but they choose the skirt, at first I was disappointed as I preferred the coat design I had done, but now I am kind of glad as the skirt its much less pattern modification which works in with unexpectedly less time at moment! Still want to make my jacket design up at some stage though, would be nice if we could have all the patterns!

No advice on finding your mojo I am sorry, I get in a bit of a funk sometimes too, want to design but not sew or vice versa, or neither. For me I just have to go with the flow and wait for it to return, forcing myself to partake in something I'm not feeling always ends with disastrous results.

  2. I feel you! I am totally unmotivated after making a couple of duds recently. But I'm not allowing myself to buy new fabric until I hack through the stash I have. So I better start cracking them out... Good luck on your coat!

  3. awesome! you're doing the coat, too!!(I am, also!)
I received my fabric, and it was not what I originally wanted for the design... ugn! oh well, some compromises need to be made for a project like this, I guess....

  4. I totally know what you mean about the motivation to sew thing... I've been feeling that way lately too. Hopefully the book will serve as a motivator! I'm going to be doing a dress and I can't wait to see your coat!

  6. I feel ya on both accounts. I've given up on making a bustier after 2 disasterous mock-ups. Right now I'm working on a playsuit that;s coming along verrrrry slowly. Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

  7. What's all this about participating in the book? Are you making one of their patterns or designing your own? I'm confused! I totally missed all this!

Sounds great whatever it is - I know you'll do a fantastic job!

  8. Wow! You too! Congratulations! Now I'm slowly feeling sad that I never signed up to this secret project...but i thought I'd be so busy in July and needed to prioritize....ahh...well..looking forward to your coat!

  9. I hate getting discouraged about sewing, but for me it happens a lot. When it does I make something easy but useful, like an elasticized peasant top or pajamas. It makes me remember I CAN sew something that's not a disaster.

  14. Hey! I'm new to your blog- it's wonderful! I just wanted to comment because over the last few weeks I've hit sewer's block, too. I wish I knew a magic cure that could give everyone back their motivations, but I just don't. I'll keep looking though!

  16. Sometimes I do something useful and related to sewing and that gets me going again. Organizing patterns or cutting bias strips or other sewing chores sometimes helps. Anything that I should get done anyhow and that I would not "waste" time on while in the middle of a fun project. Hope this helps.

  18. How you progressing with the coat? Did the fabric arrive after all? I am just starting the skirt now - oops. Lacking motivation to sew something for someone other than myself, even though we get them back, its not a very "me" kind of garment.

  20. I can relate. I go through times where I am not in the sewing mode. But then it always comes back again thank goodness. I'm sure you'll get in the mood again soon.

I'll have the pics up from the photo shoot of my latest skirt on Monday. The previous post is the tute on how to make it. See you then.

  21. Perhaps if you take a little detour and sew something small, pretty and simple - a bag or a skirt, perhaps - just to get back in the swing of things? I can't wait to see your finished coat!
