SSS - day 14 + sewing based rant

SSS - day 14
Frankensteined and refashioned cardigan(s) as blogged here

I had such a lovely day off yesterday that I decided to take another one off today to finish my new dress. I clearly jinxed myself as I had a bad day, I ate about 6000 calories and I'm angry about my dress.

The intention was to make something with a relaxed fit with a similar sort of vibe as this gorgeous 1920s dress as worn by Rhiannon of Liebemarlene Vintage.

I'm worried mine just looks like a tent. Admittedly, Rhiannon is a stick insect, so perhaps non-fitted dresses just suit her better than me. Can any of my lovely bloggy friends help? How do you make a loose fitting dress without it looking like you made something 3 sizes too big?

The other issue I am having is one that has been plaguing me for years. What do you do with fabric that creases like a bastard? I know that theoretically the solution is to make something that lends itself to the creased look... which is why I chose this particular vibe of dress. But again, there is a fine line between looking relaxed vintage cool and looking like you couldn't be arsed ironing your dress this morning.

Grrrr! The offending dress has been relegated to my wardrobe and I don't want to see it for a while. Perhaps it's not as bad as I think. I'll let it settle for a while and I'll take it out for some photos when I'm feeling less belligerent.

  1. 6000 calories??? That's a joke, isn't it? OMG!:-))
I dont't eat anything currently. Twice a year I practise 'Buchinger`s therapeutic fasting' (dictionary) . That's my personal way to improve my eating habits regulary.

  2. Sorry to hear you had a bad day, but if it's any consolation, on a totally shallow note, you look awesome! LOVE the glasses and cardigan.

  3. First don't worry too much about your calories, you know there will be days when you won't each much and that makes it even in the end! For the tent dress advice, I've noticed that side bust darts and regular back darts help to shape the garment without making it too tight. I share your desperation on creased fabrics, this is one of my sewing curses as well and I have no advice but I'll check here to see if a fellow blogger can enlighten us :)

  4. Oh, sorry you had a bad day... hope today is better for you!
I reckon the trick to getting this dress to look good on a girl with curves is to make it more fitted. I'm not talking skin tight here, but lightly skimming the curves of your body, so have it curve in at the waist and out over the hips and bust, and make the skirt a tad more flared than the one in the picture. Think about someone like Beyonce. She is a girl with great curves and she rocks hourglass shaped dresses. Imagine what a straight side seamed dress like this shape would look like on B, it would do nothing for her...but if you shaped the side seams to mimic the body curves it would look sensational on an hourglass shape. Am I making sense here... ? hope so.
Don't you reckon it is quite nicely warm here now? I need a cardi in the evenings, but for the day I haven't been cold since the weekend, yay! for the warmth!

  6. Cute look! I have the not-a-stick-insect figure, too, and not even the benefit of an hourglass shape. So I stay away from loosely fitting dresses (it looks alright as long as it's fitted from bust to waist, in my case). I'd try Carolyn's advice, it sounds pretty sound... :)
