I'm wearing my draped skirt (for which there is a very old tutorial here) and my lace crop top which I am yet to blog about. It's made from lace I bought when I visited Tessuti in Melbourne (I'm pretty sure you can buy it online). I think it cost me $165/m and I bought a metre... which is crazily expensive, but my logic at the time was that I'd pay more than that for a top, so why shouldn't I pay that much for fabric? In the end I was delighted with my top. It has raglan sleeves and little bows on the arm seams and down the back. I'll photograph it better on the weekend. And I used to the left-over lace for a very foxy wiggle dress that I will also photograph at a later date!
So I suppose I got my money's worth... but I doubt I'd pay that much for fabric again. What do you think? How much would you be willing to pay for fabric?

wow! That is a lot for fabric. I don't know if I could bring myself to spend that much. I think the most I have spent a metre on fabric is $40.
ReplyDeleteI remember that wonderful plaid skirt! Still looks fabulous... and obviously I completely adore the black lace top.
ReplyDeleteHow much would I pay for fabric, well I've never paid that much! I have a friend who says, anything less than $25/m, then don't even hesitate, and I'm happy to pay $40/m for silk. I'm OK with that price, since you need barely a metre for a skirt. The most I've paid is $70/m for some gorgeously printed silk, and I felt pretty nervous sewing it up! I may wear it this month... maybe :)
Love this look!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous top!

I love this outfit, Lily! The combination of lace & plaid is unexpected, but awesome. I'm starting a surgical rotation this week at school and will no doubt start having the same problem, when it comes to finding me-made hospital-appropriate outfits. It would be so much easier, if I could just wear sundresses everyday.
ReplyDeleteSo far, the most I've been willing to pay for fabric is about $50/yard. Rarely do I spend that at home, but when I'm traveling, I talk myself into gorgeous, expensive fabrics...especially if I'm in San Francisco or NYC. This internal conversation happens a lot: "Yes, these 10 yards may cost as much as your Volvo, Mary, but you're never here! It's like doing one year's worth of shopping in one trip, that's all! NO, don't think of the credit card statement now..."
I *love* the lace top! I think it may be the prettiest lace I've ever seen (and I've been on the lookout, since I want to make a Macaron with a lace yoke...) Then again, I've never yet spent more than 20€/m (~27AUD at the current conversion rate, says Google) on fabric.
ReplyDeleteDo you wear regular clothes at hospital? I did at the hospital in NZ where I did my Paediatric rotation, but over here all hospital doctors wear white scrubs/polo shirts/lab coats (or blue/green, for those who actually work in the operating room) which are issued and washed by the hospital. Which is wonderful, if you ever managed to produce a blood bath by taking out the needle before taking off the tourniquet (and amniotic fluid, of course... ;)
Love that white top from day 4!!!
ReplyDeleteoooo,I'm terrified of cutting into expensive fabric, and I'd never consider paying that much! But I'm a tight bitch! LOVE this top, though,it's so pretty amd clearly great quality lace! Gagging to see the wiggle frock!
I haven't bought new fabric for a while,I have lots of vintage fabric I got at a market last year to use.....when I get around to it! I think I'm going to get into re-modeling a couple of things next...
Your top is beautiful, and your rationale sounds reasonable to me! It would have to be pretty special fabric though...
